A Gargoyle's Eye View of Oxford

This morning Brett and I climbed the 121 (most of them spiral and extremely narrow and steep) steps of the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin tower. At least, the little boy who emerged into the sun as we were headed down was counting "122" as he stepped onto the platform. Must have been fun to walk up with him.

From the top we had a clear view of Oxford in each direction, simply stepping through short tunnels and squeezing around a half dozen people each time we wanted a new panorama. We could see the spires of Christchurch, the Radcliffe Library Camera in all its glory, the High Street where we walk every day, and the surrounding countryside. At last, we shared the view with the gargoyles.
